Bred to hunt hare by scent. Now trusted to sniff out contraband fruit.

The beagle is a small British hound with a big appetite and an even bigger nose. Here is what the breed standard, a large UK veterinary study and a US government programme say about it, in plain English.

03A QUICK HEALTH CHECK

What do vets
see most often?

Pick a topic to see how often it was recorded in beagles under UK veterinary care in 2019. The figures come from a random sample of 3,729 beagles in a 2025 VetCompass study.

These are prevalence figures for a population, not a prediction for any one dog. Your vet is the right person to ask about your own beagle.

Health check

Choose a topic
Obesity24.27%

Obesity was the most common finding: 24.27% of the beagles sampled had it recorded in 2019. A food-driven scent hound can find snacks easily.

Teeth and gums17.78%

Periodontal (gum) disease was recorded in 17.78% of the beagles sampled, the second most common finding.

Nails11.61%

Overgrown nails were recorded in 11.61% of the beagles sampled, making them the third most common finding.

Ears11.18%

Otitis externa, inflammation of the outer ear canal, was recorded in 11.18%. Long, hanging ears are a breed hallmark.

Anal sacs10.59%

Anal sac impaction was recorded in 10.59% of the beagles sampled, completing the five most common findings.

Median age at death

A VetCompass study of 19,906 beagles under UK veterinary care found a median age at death of 11.28 years: 11.70 for females and 10.75 for males. Cancer-related causes were the most common group.

05LIVING WITH ONE

Four things
owners notice.

  1. The nose leads the walk

A hound bred to follow scent will want to stop and sniff. Many owners plan walks with time for it rather than against it.

  2. Food is never safe

The same skill that finds fruit in airport luggage finds snacks in bags and bins. Keeping food out of reach saves a lot of arguments.

  3. Weight creeps up

With obesity the most common finding, regular weigh-ins and a chat with your vet about a healthy weight are worth building into the routine.

  4. Ears, teeth and nails

Ear inflammation, gum disease and overgrown nails all made the top five findings. Routine vet check-ups are a good moment to look at all three.

Five things worth
sniffing out.

  1. A British hare hound

The FCI breed standard lists Great Britain as the country of origin and places the beagle among the small-sized scent hounds. It is believed to descend from the larger foxhound, for hunting hare on foot.

  2. One dog, one trainer, 1984

The US National Detector Dog Training Center in Newnan, Georgia started in 1984 with one dog and one trainer. It now covers a 17-acre site with 100 kennels.

  3. A law named after them

The Beagle Brigade Act was signed in late December 2024. It supports detector dog training at the Newnan centre to help keep foreign pests and diseases out of US farms.

  4. Lumps are more common

Lipomas, benign fatty lumps, were recorded in 5.50% of the UK beagles sampled, almost four times the figure the authors cite for UK dogs overall.

  5. Pure breeds, mixed results

A 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs found an average life expectancy of 12.7 years for pure breeds and 12.0 years for crossbreeds. It used a different method from the beagle study, so the figures are not directly comparable.

07QUICK QUESTIONS

Beagles, answered.

Short answers to the questions people ask most.

Where do beagles come from?

The international breed standard (FCI No. 161) lists Great Britain as the country of origin. It describes the beagle as a merry hound whose essential function is to hunt, primarily hare, by following a scent.

The FCI breed standard gives a desirable height at the withers of 33 to 40 centimetres. That places the beagle among the small-sized scent hounds.

How long do beagles live?

In a study of UK beagles under veterinary care, the median age at death was 11.28 years. Females lived longer, at a median of 11.70 years, against 10.75 years for males.

What health problems are common in beagles?

A 2025 study of beagles under UK veterinary care in 2019 found that the most common findings were obesity (24.27%), periodontal disease (17.78%), overgrown nails (11.61%), outer ear inflammation (11.18%) and anal sac impaction (10.59%).

What is the Beagle Brigade?

It is the US Department of Agriculture’s detector dog programme, in which beagles and other dogs sniff out fruit, vegetables and meat in luggage, mail and vehicles. Its training centre in Newnan, Georgia started in 1984 with one dog and one trainer.
